🌿✨ Celebrating Women in Environmental Leadership this Women’s History Month ✨🌿
We’re excited to introduce Sachy Huerta, our new Communications Outreach Coordinator! Sachy supports community engagement and environmental education through outreach, and public programming.
Growing up in Southern California, she developed a deep appreciation for native plants, wildlife, and open spaces. Sachy is passionate about helping communities connect with local ecosystems and inspiring people of all ages to explore, appreciate, and protect the natural landscapes around them.
Sachy holds a B.S. in Plant Science from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and previously served as an AmeriCorps Member with the California Emergency Response Corps, supporting wildfire survivors, disaster recovery, and community preparedness workshops.
We’re proud to celebrate women like Sachy who are helping connect communities with the natural world. 💚🌎

🦋 Wildlife Wednesday: California Aster Magic
If you want to see the impact that one plant species can have, just look at all the butterfly species Board member Cynthia Woo has seen visiting California aster (Corethrogyne filaginifolia). It truly is a butterfly magnet! 🦋
Blooming late in the season when many other nectar sources are fading, this resilient native plant becomes a vital fuel stop for butterflies and other pollinators. From painted ladies to skippers and sulfurs, the diversity it supports is incredible.
This is the power of planting native species!

Another meaningful weekend of stewardship with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy 🌿
On February 14 at Abalone Cove, volunteers removed black mustard from our restoration site, helping reduce invasive weeds and create space for native habitat to thrive. On February 15 at White Point Nature Preserve, the team continued the momentum by removing black mustard and garden daisy from new planting sites and carefully haloing young native plants to support their growth. We were excited to welcome a group from King`s Hawaiian, who joined us in making a hands-on impact — thank you for your partnership and support!
We’re so grateful for everyone who showed up to protect and restore these beautiful open spaces. Together, we’re strengthening native habitats and caring for the Peninsula for generations to come. 💚

Big news for the Peninsula 🌿 We’re proud to share the start of the brand-new George F Canyon Nature Center and support this exciting project led by the City of Rolling Hills Estates.
The new Nature Center will serve as a vibrant hub for:
🌱 Hands-on environmental education programs
🦋 Interactive exhibits highlighting local wildlife, native plants, and canyon ecosystems
👩🏫 School field trips and science-based learning
🥾 Guided hikes and interpretive nature walks
👨👩👧 Public programs and community events
🌎 Stewardship initiatives focused on habitat restoration and conservation
George F Canyon is one of the Peninsula’s ecological treasures where coastal sage scrub meets willow riparian habitat, supporting native birds, pollinators, and diverse wildlife along its scenic trails. This new Center will deepen our community’s connection to this extraordinary landscape and expand opportunities for meaningful outdoor experiences.
Stay tuned for more information about the construction of the new Nature Center.
It`s more than a building. It`s an investment in environmental education, conservation, and community. 🌿

Today we’re paying tribute to Jeanette Marantos — the beloved Los Angeles Times plants reporter whose work helped connect so many to the natural world. 🌎💚
Jeanette wasn’t just a journalist — she was a passionate advocate for plants, native flora and fauna, and the wild places that make our communities richer. From shining a light on mountain lion crossings to endangered butterflies and native bees, her storytelling brought wildlife and conservation into focus for thousands of readers. 🐾🌸🦋
Her dedication to covering the resilience of our ecosystems and the people who work to protect them inspired so many to care more deeply for the world around us. Get the link in the bio for one of her articles about the Conservancy`s use of goats in restoration areas.
Today we remember her warmth, curiosity, and the legacy she leaves behind in every garden, trail, and wild space she helped us appreciate. 🍃✍️ Rest in peace, Jeanette — your voice will continue to grow in every natural space and backyard refuge. 💫

The Conservancy High School Internship Program is growing the next generation of environmental leaders 🌱
This weekend, our winter cohort helped plant rare Southern California Black Walnut trees at White Point Preserve. Seeds to grow these special trees were collected, then carefully grown for two years in our native plant nursery before being planted in the preserve.
This effort is part of a larger conservation strategy to establish satellite populations around the Peninsula, helping protect and strengthen this rare, locally native tree for the future. Every planting makes a difference. 🌳
The students pictured are part of our winter cohort of seven high school interns representing:
• Peninsula High School
• North Torrance High School
• Port of Los Angeles High School
• Parnassus Preparatory Academy
• Torrance High School
From restoration plantings to public nature-based activities, they’re learning what it truly means to steward the land — and we couldn’t be more proud. 💚
