If you live on or near the Palos Verdes Peninsula, it is almost certain that the Conservancy has touched your life in some way. Whether you’ve hiked our local trails, set foot in a nature center or simply enjoyed the Peninsula’s rare wildlife and unique coastal beauty from afar, the Conservancy’s impact is there – protecting and restoring the Peninsula’s natural lands for generations to come.
To make funding for this vital work possible, we rely on the generosity of donors like you. Follow in the footsteps of the dedicated residents who launched the Conservancy and take action to Protect the Peninsula today.
Together, we can create a healthier, more resilient Peninsula and ensure its open spaces remain open forever.
Donated funds go directly to creating healthy habitats for wildlife and forever protecting critical open spaces throughout the Peninsula. The Conservancy uses natural solutions to help remedy human’s historic impact on the Peninsula, restore its rare wildlife and preserve clean air, water and natural lands – all of which are needed for a healthy and resilient community.
To combat the effects of urbanization, agriculture, natural disasters and the introduction of non-native plants, the Conservancy works to restore native coastal sage scrub, grassland, cactus scrub and riparian habitat to return damaged lands to a healthier condition.
These efforts include:
Working with community partners and local government to monitor and minimize surface erosion and wildfire risk, sustain endangered wildlife and other rare local species and enhance the Peninsula’s natural beauty and biodiversity.
Growing 50,000 native plants each year and planting 20,000 per year in restoration projects.
Working with and coordinating volunteers, who contributed 27,105 hours to education and restoration projects across the Peninsula last year.
Leading a local Goat Grazing Program that deploys a herd of 300 goats effectively remove invasive weeds including fennel, ice plant and other non-native plants.
Partnered with experts and local leaders to lead the recovery of the The Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly – one of the most successful recovery efforts for an endangered species in California history. The PV Blue Butterfly, once thought extinct, is now found in numbers exceeding 4,000.
Hosting a locally renowned Third Grade Naturalist Program that serves 24 schools annually, giving approximately 2,000 youngsters from elementary schools in Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Lomita, Carson, Wilmington, Torrance, Redondo Beach and Los Angeles the opportunity to learn about nature firsthand – both in the classroom and through hands-on experience in our nature preserves. About half of these students come from low-income areas and Title One schools.
