💜 Meet Black Sage, one of the Palos Verdes Peninsula`s most beloved native plants. Known botanically as Salvia mellifera, this aromatic member of the mint family blooms from spring through summer and can grow nearly 4-5 feet tall. Its flowers are a favorite among pollinators, making it a favorite plant for supporting local wildlife and a beautiful addition to any native garden. Want to bring one home? 🌱 Make a difference this weekend! Comment EVENTS to get the link to the calendar. Join us Saturday, September 12, at Agua Amarga Reserve from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM to help restore coastal sage scrub habitat and increase host plant resources for the rare and endangered Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly.
Then, on Sunday, September 13, at White Point Nature Preserve, also from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, help us plant native shrubs, remove invasive weeds, water native plants, and groom trails. Students are welcome and may receive volunteer service hours at Agua Amarga.

🌱Outdoor Volunteer Day at George F Canyon was a success! Our volunteers tackled non-native grasses that had overtaken two lookout platforms and two benches along the trail, restoring access to views hidden for far too long—great group, great work, and a great day out on the land. 👀 Keep your eyes open on the trail, and you just might catch a flash of coppery orange darting through the brush. That is the Allen`s Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin), one of the Peninsula`s most striking native residents. Small and stocky with a brilliant iridescent red throat on the males, this species breeds along a narrow coastal strip from Oregon down through California. We are lucky to call it a neighbor!
